They simply do not know how things work. That is why they need superstitions to explain evolution, neurons work, DNA, Big Bang, earthquakes, wars, etc.

So, as long as we have poorly educated people, we will have superstitions and as a result - religious (holy) wars (say, between christians and muslims.

Because trust in leadership was necessary for survival, thus evolutionary built in our genes, we will always have heroes (or suiciders, depending on your point of view) and their acts of good (evel as seen by opposing group/leader).
