And it does not have to be square (cubic, etc.) matrix (number of rows in general do not have to be equal to number of columns).

Also, not ANY matrix is a tensor. Tensor is an object which is ALWAYS defined in some coordinate system, therefore elements of tensor should transform certain way when a coordinate system changes.
