Well, such properties of matter as spin, various charges (electric, baryon, etc.), mass and some others HAVE to mathematically follow from something more fundamental. Standard model STARTS from the level of present knowledge (=particles as they are) and explains nicely how forces and interactions (governing everything above) emerge (using symmetry of space and time and identicity of particles). Standard model thus uses 19 experimental parameters (masses, charges, etc) and symmetries to explain it all "futher up".

Strings are an attempt to futher reduce number of arbitrary parameters to only 3: h, c, G (Plank constant, speed of light, and gravitational constant), and to derive everything from these three numbers by assuming that everything consists of massless strings (of space itself?), quantum levels of vibration of which we call mass, charge, spin, etc. It (string model) needs more spatial dimensions to explain all variety of properties of known particles (including graviton), thus needs 10 small (othervise been seen) spatial dimensions plus time.

I like this theory (and made some small personal contribution into it). The problem is the complexity of all possible ways to move in 10 dimensions which results in enormous amount of enormousely complex mathematical monsters and impossibility to get any experimental data from such small world.

I think, it is very and very promising model of lower floor of everything.
