I think it's wise to avoid religious arguments with family members unless they have demonstrated a real tendency to approach the matter with utmost honesty (and the conversations are private). My view is that faith issues are a delicate matter and for many people they cannot disassociate a spiritual belief from a literalist belief. For that reason, any attempt to change their literalist view will only be perceived by many as an attack on their spiritual views. I don't think that is a desirable way to be perceived by one's family and friends. Of course, it is always important to remain honest about one's views when asked.
