Because that is what people fill gaps in their knowledge by. They simply call "acts of god(s)" what they PERSONALLY do not know. And you can't even believe how ignorant some people can be (thus putting god(s) literally everywhere). This forum illustrates it very well.

As to a meter stick, it does NOT depend on your senses: it is THE SAME for all people/ aliens etc.
