Paul,

I think Einstein was able to overcome skepticism by introducing a few other papers (e.g., the photoelectic effect) that got the attention of the scientific community. I think an interesting parallel would be Michael Faraday who was largely ignored if not for the attempts of James Clerk Maxwell. Of course, we all know that it was Maxwell's equations that left the door open for Einstein...
