and being aware of one's own existence.

I don't know if ants would qualify for "conscious" under this defition, but complex vertebrates do (fish, humans, dogs, cats, birds)...

Therefore if I'm able to comprehend the fact that my physical body has ceased to sustain chemical reactions... then that would qualify as not only "consciousness", but "afterlife" as well.
