Computer simulations of galaxy creation and growth has more or less proven that a mixture of hot (ie. neutrino) and cold (axions, supersymmetric partners, etc.) dark matter must exist. Existing theories, but not completely verified ones like GUT and supersymmetric theories provide candidate particles and their properties. The properties are no more magical than superconductivity. All of the so-called magical properties have been observed experimentally in nature. Only the particles themselves have not yet been observed. But there are testable theories for their observation.
