How can you say that mathematical structures (which we call photon, electron, etc) can not die or are not affected by gravity? Write down the Maxwell equations (actually more accurate QED equations) in the presence of gravitational field - and you find that a solution is affected by the field (=grav Doppler). Write down QED equation for electric charge and for a photon -and you'll find that what you call "photon" can "die" and can "be born" as a mathematical consequence of interaction with electric charge.
