You feel like you have already experienced certain situation or certain thoughts in the past. It is "false alarm" of your brain which constantly analyses environment to make decision "new and unfamiliar - or old and familiar" and to warn you by "red flag" that it is something you've experienced before. Sometimes situation is close to what you have seen (or dreamed about) but not quite yet brain switches to exited "red flag" state and gives you eere feeling of familiarity with the situation, while in fact it is new situation.

That is why people sometimes think that it is supernatural transfer of information from other person or even other time (they call it soul), while it just a brain overreaction.
