Richard,

I don't know what to say, except that you are right and that I am a fool.

But perhaps I wasn't that wrong. In my opinion, what's going to happen is going to happen no matter what, it's just a matter of time. I've seen that in my life, I often resist the pressure to do something, or to respond to something, and what usually happens is that life always finds a way to impose its almighty will upon you. I see that everything that happened in my life, good or bad, would have happened one way or another, regardless of what I did. And I believe the same happens with societies.

I believe in fate and I feel completely powerless against it. I don't mean fate as in "it's written in the stars", but fate as in "I am not the master of my own life". My life is nothing like I planned for. The good news is that my life is as good as it gets, so perhaps we should trust fate's wisdom and not resist it. If I were religious I'd probably say that we should allow God to take care of our lives, that even if we really don't understand what God has in mind we should take for granted that God knows what is good for us better than we do.

But of course I'm not religious.
