It was more like this:
Prophet (peace be upon him) did not bring Democracy in to Arabia like that we have now. The Democracy was brought about because some disagreement between the people as to who should be the next Chief or Sheriff (dispute settler). There was no president as the last leader whom every body knew to be learned and agreed with appointed such a leader. When the dispute for a sheriff arose an election was held but one candidate Imam Ali was absent, while at war defending Islam, and the election was rushed because of greed and haste. The division between Shiites and Sunnis came from this point in History.
