Did anyone go out of their way and carve the Grand Canyon out of rock with a hammer and chisel? No, it was a natural process. No sentient forces were involved. All we know is the universe exists: whether or not the cause was sentient or not is hardly determinate, but current theory does not require, or even suggest, sentience.
