Either there are no controlling forces in the universe other than the physical forces mentioned by Alexander,

or there are supernatural controlling forces, commonly called god, or just advanced beings,

and if so then it is logical that these controlling forces are responsible for the disaster.

As I suggest in my Revelations post below, it appears that human sacrifice is necessary to produce profound change. This seems to be true whether or not there are supernatural controlling forces.

However, there are numerous examples from Jesus to martyrs to genocides of profound good coming out profound bad. So if there are such controlling forces in existence, sacrifice can be there only reason for what has happened. Let's hope that the sacrifice is not in vain either way.
