I happen to be an expert on informality.
"Just because someone has a argument that makes sense to a layman, it's not a good reason to "let them have it." I feel it's always better to correct and explain (no matter how harshly) than to let people walk around ignorant of the workings of the universe ESPECIALLY when they're touting false rhetoric that might get others to start believing their bunk."

By "let them have it," I meant give them a piece of your mind, NOT "let them win the point" --
yet this interplay of informality has not caused anyone to be deceived, just a need for clarification. I would continue but must run now.
