| How Do We Figure Out Celestial Distances?

I know that we have figures that say how far away stars are, but I have next to no knowledge how the process works. A radar-like system obviously would prove ineffective after a timespan of a few years, yet we can confidently say that certain star systems are hundreds or thousands of light-years away.
