Although this does not appear at the "God & Science" forum, this post refers in part to exchanges which have happened there too.

In astronomy, any motive but to find and explain truth is a an open door to deceptive practices.

This web site became a "political" astromony web site.
Lyndon Baines Johnson illustrated where that goes with his statement in 1964:
"I am a free man, an American, a United States Senator, and a Democrat, in that order."
Politics allows the truth to be just another
word in a striving for turf and influence.

Likely, there are some posters and past posters at astronomy.net whose honest self-disclosure would read something like this:
"I am a businessman (or careerist), a father, a genius, and a truth-seeker, in that order."

Human predators feel fully justified by their "inner need," whether in a foreign war or during affairs in their homeland. If checks and balances are lacking, they can use the excuse of "manners" or any nuance for deceptions and maneuvers of political debate. In the absense of truth-based moderation, deceptions can win at astronomy.net.
It is the same old whine, I am sure, that true astronomers have sounded over the centuries when corrupt officials trampled truth. But truth remains and those officials are gone forever, whatever their motives were. Sadly, many of those officials would probably do it all again, and keep the truth from emerging fast enough to save their own times -- out of vanity probably,
or lack of comprehension about what is corrupt and what is not.
