Strange Shadow On The Moon

about a month ago i was driving home and the moon was incredibly large and low, quite stunning, but there was a perfectly straight shadow putting around half of it into darkness.

i understand that the crescent is formed by the shadow of the earth, fair enough as the earth is curved, but how it is possible that the moon appears perfectly cut in half , i cant see that it is possible. but i saw it with my own eyes!

does anyone have an explanation for this please?
