Are Stars Really There When We See Them

While watching the lunar eclipse I was discussing with a friend that the light from stars takes a long time to reach us so when we see it the star may not actually be there anymore.
He thought this made sense but is not convinced it's true. Can anyone please post a link to a website that explains this so I can convince him.
