not absolutely necessary if you breach the swish horizon. unless the arc of the basketball trajectory is considered as a spin. if one can produce the minimal velocity just needed to reach the swish horizon then the best angle the shooter should release the ball from would be 45 degrees from the shooters hand with the "base" of the angle such that it bisects the basketball pole perpendicularly. as luck would have it the spin of the earth, the course of its orbit about the sun and the rest of the motion of the universe can safely be ignored.

but the rim shots and backboard banks now thats another story when considering spin.
