But I might substitute the word arithemetic for mathematics. Mathematics may include continuous varibles, complex variables(2-D) or higher dimensions, etc. which are just a more complicated basis for the numbers involved. Then there are functions with special names, most of which come from series representations, which are just the addition of things that are multiplied or divided together, which inturn are names of the addition of identical numbers or their inverses.
