Albert Einstein considered space and time to be one and the same, "spacetime", time i suppose could be a measure of the observable decay rate of matter, as matter reverts to energy, if i remember correctly, time slows down if you are on the event horizon of a black hole, in theory.
the true nature of time is still a great mystery, the nature of gravity, and spatial quantum mechanics is connected to linear time.
