Sigma Orionis is a multiple star system, with 5 (actually more but as far as this question is concerned I'll only worry about 5 of them) components, labeled A-E. A and B are very close (.25") and have a combined mag 3.8, C mag 10, D mag 7.2, and E mag 6.5. C is 11" from A, D is 13" from A, and E is 42" from A.

I thought that stars where label in order of magnitude, but these seem to be labeled in order of distance from A.

Which is the standard system of labelling multiple star systems?
