If your Mom can take it back, do it. Any scope that advertizes real high magnification on the box is usually of poor quality. Get something from the Orion catalog in the same price range, it will much better quality. Maybe you can talk her into sprining for a few more bucks. A refractor or Mak in the 80mm to 102MM (or larger) range on an EQ mount is a good starter scope. They run $200 to $300. If all she can afford is less that that, get a good pair of binoculars instead. You'll see much more in a good set of binos than a cheap telescope. Get a good starter book also like, Skywatching by David Levy or one of the many other books and star mapping the sky. There's lots to see out there, keep us posted.
