Why Not Use The Barlow??

I have actually acquired really nice views with the use of my barlow and my 35mm Ultima. I'm not sure I understand why you wouldn't use a barlow. From many people I have heard that if you purchase two or three well thought out EP's and a barlow you will have the most affordable and, if you've done your calculations correctly, the versatile EP collection. Also with the Barlow it offers me with a bit of ER so I can try and use my glasses and still have a high enough Mag. to view fine detail on planets & the moon.
I just asking, what the difference is between a 17.5mm ocular and a 35mm with a 2X barlow thrown on it?? Is the image fuzier, lose of detail..? Sorry I'm not well affiliated with other products other than the ones I own.
Thank you for your kind advice!
Clear skies!
