Are you sure you are actually looking at Jupiter? With the lowest power eyepiece do you see any disc at all and the four easily seen satellites? If not, you aren't looking at Jupiter. A star will look as you described but Jupiter will have an easily seen disc even at the lowest power you are using and will increase in size (but not necessarily in sharpness) with higher powers.
