I have heard of that situation, and though I have never tried it myself I recently read a book "Nithtwatch" by Terence Dichenson. In it Mr Dichinson relates a story concerning a college somewhere in mid Ohio that went into an abandand mine shaft and looked up into the sky. They did not see a thing.

The point is, it is the sunlight that is disturbed through out the sky that stops us from seeing the stars and not our daylight vision...
