I also own a Tasco but a small 60mm refractor. I have purchased a new eypiece or two for it and it is okay. I bought it used and then found the same reviews that you have found. There are several websites that may help you out..

go to the bottom and find the section about tasco fixup. There are others but this is one of the better ones I have found.

Just one thing to remember, don't set your expectations to high and you shouldn't be disappointed. I was overwhelmed when I saw the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter, and a few other objects. I am new to this also so I am just starting out.
