I second Bob on David Levy's book. I checked it out at the library. I like the way it breaks down each constellation. It has icons identifing what can be seen naked eye, binoculars and telescope. See I have no telescope and I found it very helpful in keeping me occupied with my binoculars.

If I am not mistaken it also has a good section on the different lives of a star. From birth to black hole.
