In playing with a cheap pair that had been dropped and exhibit the same symptoms I found 2 tiny screw heads on the side of each barrel that adjust the position of the prisms. This can be used to bring the two images together. It's rather tedious, and when you think you've got it it about right looking at the cat across the room go out and look at the stars and see how close you really are. Take a break before you get a headache. Goodluck!
