| Trouble With Binoculars - Some Qs

My wife has given me a pair of hand-me-down 8x40 binoculars to fool around with. She took them to a concert last month and they worked fine. The first time I look through them, though, I have double vision. Moving the eyepieces closer together or father apart doesn't help. (Please forgive my lack of terminology.) If I aim at an object, it's centered in one lens and off center in the other. Is this correctible? Should I even bother with it? I have no problem getting a finer pair, but maybe I'm missing something simple. I just don't know enough about them. For instance, in front of the focusing lever, there is a small dial with 60 ////70 written on it. What does that do? Thanks for any input. --ald |
