A Question On Quantum Physics

just finished an intro block on quantum physics on my course. I am just wondering. Does anyone know what causes an atom to go from a higher energy state to a lower one, with the emission of a quanta?

Please don't tell me because it is more stable that way. Something has got to motivate it!
