Dark Matter . . .

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't dark matter a simple construct we use to explain the expansion of the universe? That is to say, that without the additional gravity of dark matter acting upon the universe - it should expand at a more rapid rate? And is it also true that this effect on expansion is the only way we have to measure or even know that dark matter exists?
