Never view the sun directly. There are specialist filters available but the projection method is probably the best.And no you will not be able to see flares and prominences.These are simply drowned out by the suns light.They are visible during total eclipses though.Mars will be well placed in the summer months.You should be able to make out the phase of venus in your scope. hope this helps.
