Ozone depletion is mostly over the poles because the breakdown of the gas occurs more efficiently when the air becomes very very cold (ie over the poles) and ice crystals are present. Circulation patterns over the South Pole also play a role in the formation of the hole.

Fortunately, the nations of the world plan to cut back or eliminate the pollution (CFC gas) that cause the depletion of the ozone layer.
