Kip - thank you for the response. I am starting to realise that the REAL thing is going to be the ONLY thing that will do the job! So a refractor 'scope will be the next 'piggy bank killer'.

I have a couple of all mechanical Nikon FM2's and a Pentax 67 with mirror lock-up. I presume that either of these will be suitable? They have B settings, and can cope with long exposures. The P67 shutter is electronically governed but I believe it can be converted by Pentax to do mechanical (battery-power-less) long-exposures.
