Manu is the Hindu version of Noah and he took the 7 sages with him after being warned by Brahma about the flood.These fellows took all that they needed to save and sailed over the flood waters for a long time. Brahma then appeared as a fish and towed them to the rising Himalayas (from under the flood waters) and so they survived. All mankind is said to have come from Manu's decendants and the 7 wise men ( + one of them took his wife along on Manu's boat)saved all knowledge and it is from this that civilization could start again.For this the 7 sages turned into stars (including the one chap's wife) - Ursa Majora.
