and use it even after you get a better one, just so your wife isn't disappointed, this is what i'd do with it:

if your EP size is .965", try to locate an orthoscopic in something around 10mm [might be a bit difficult to find but i'm sure they are available used and maybe even new still] and get a solar filter that will fit the dew-shield of the scope [the 'advantage' of a small aperture for solar is the filter will be relatively inexpensive! if you 'shop around' you can probably get both the EP and filter for $100 or less] and use it as a 'dedicated' solar observing scope.

Just a suggestion if you need to save your wife's feelings...
