If your eye is positioned so that the exit pupil of the eyepiece is not at the entrance to your eye,you will not be able to see the full field and may also see the areas of the light cone that are blocked by the diagonal. You can determine where this point is by starting to far away and as you close with the eyepiece noting just where the view has expanded to it's maximum. Any closer and you may start to see shadows of the diagonal etc..
