Eyepiece Problems?

Hi All,
I have a question about eyepieces/focusing. I bought a Skyview 8" reflector about a year ago. I have noticed that when I use the 9mm eyepiece, images(planets) are very hard or next to impossible to focus for a sharp image. I bought a 40mm Tel Vue eyepiece which gives me very sharp images of the moon or other deep space objects. But when I switch back to the 9mm it is very hard to focus. Is this just the way it is or is their something wrong with my scope? Did I pick the wrong scope for viewing planets? I checked the
colomation and had a experienced friend do a star test. He thinks the optics are OK. Do you think a Tel Vue 9mm would give me sharper images(Nagler vs Orion)or is all high power viewing touchy?
The specs. on the scope are 8"/800mm/f4 reflector.

Dave
