Luminance Of A Picture

hello , i am working with pictures so i can find out some traits that can be of a picture. one of the things im trying to find out is luminance of a picture. i am using registax but it does not successfully do this for me. is there a way that i can figure out the luminance of a picture in a form of numbers .
