I'm new here. My name is Forrest, I'm 36 years old. An IS Operations Supervisor (been working with computers since high school). And, the important part...I've just taken an interest in learning more about the stars and planets. The metor shower a few nights back is what triggered this sudden interest; I used to be interested in space during Apollo (when I was growing up) and guess it has been in the back of my mind since then.

I may be getting my very first telescope for Christmas...my girlfriend has allowed me a $500 budget, so I need your help.

I'm currently looking at two reflector models, the Firstscope 114 Short and NexStar 114 GT. If I went with a refractor, I would probably be looking at the NexStar 80 GT. This may be the only Christmas present I get...so, I'm hoping to get the most bang for my buck! :-)

Would any of these be a good choice for a 1st telescope? Opinions on which would be better?

I own a Kodak DC290 digital camera which I might like to use to document my sky watching. Would that camera work (even if the picture aren't perfect) or would I be better off getting an inexpensive 35mm and shooting slides (I have a high-res slide scanner).

Thanks very much,
Forrest
