Serial I/O Problem With NexStar 11 GPS

I experienced exactly this problem with my Dell laptop (bought specifically to run a NexStar 11 GPS). The problem seems to be with slop in the RS-232 standard will allows RS-232 compliant devices to be incompatable (sigh).

Solution: I bought a USB-to-serial interface gadget that fixed the problem. The one I bought is a Belkin F5U103 USB-to-serial adapter and the scope/computer interface worked just fine.

There are numerous USB-to-serial interfaces out there, maybe something less expensive than this one (~$75).
