Need Info On Cheap 4.5 Scopes

Meade and Celestron both have a similar scope for about $169 that is an 18" reflector, 4.5" aperture, with a "corrective lens" that allows for a f/9 focal length. This would be my fist scope and I am using my Christmas money for this scope. I want detail but do not understand the restrictions of a cheaper scope like this one and, say, a $500 scope of equal aperture? I have been researching magazines and Internet for about 6 weeks, and I am very confused. Some say these scope are great, some say I am wasting my money unless I spend AT LEAST $500. I don't have $500, so are these scopes a good idea? What would you suggest strictly under $200?

Thanks...
