The G-8 is basically considered a "no frills" SCT. It is made well (metal) and the optics are acceptable, if not a little better. I don't think they are Pyrex. The only drawback with the G-8 is the mount. It sits on a CG-5 mount. The EQ head is alright, but you'll need to probably do the re-grease overhaul like all others. Which I did mine last year. Works alot smoother now. The one thing you'll definitaly need to do is swap out those aluminum legs and get or build wood legs for much better stability. Overall, the G-8 is a good scope. I think they are under-rated in some fashion. The C-8 is better, but more expensive. Good Luck!!
