Help Newbie Needs Your Help !!!!

Hello there i am in need of some help before i gooooo mad! A few years ago i got interested in space and planets and things alike.So off i popped to the local argos store and purchased a telescope!!! BBIGG mistake So i took it striaght back to the shop.So for the last couple of years i have been looking at DeCENT scopes from DECENT dealers but i am so bewilered by it all.I need a good starter scope one that i dont have to upgrade so soon (i am not looking to become next miss patrick moore!!!) but i dont want to be having to upgrade every year or so.I need some thing for the planets and deep sky observation (not too deep)such as nebulea and near galaxies i have up to 400 pounds to spend could stretch a little further(kids will have to hungry for a month!!j/k) Please id be very gratefully for any advice and suggestions thank you XX
