If you want a portable rich-field telescope,
why not something like the Nextstar 80GT with GOTO ability?

I know it costs £399 here in the UK, but I bet it is cheaper in the US.

Celestron have a similar type of telescope, the Celestron 80 EQWA, which is cheaper. Same telescope but with an equitorial mount (I think).
