You can operate the GPS 11 when the battery dies. Each axis has a clutch so there is no problem with manual operation. Also, the issue of lack of magnetic compensation has been resolved with all the new Celestron scopes now shipping. I love this scope and would recommend it to anyone. This scope is heavy but I haul mine out to the field using a cart I bought from Home Depot (brand: Ames Planter's Wagen, $30.00). Putting it up on the tripod is no big deal once you do it a few times. The images are fantastic and the tracking is dead on accurate.
