Space expanded faster than the speed os light, but the matter inside didn't. Imagine a dough with raisins in it. In the owen the dough swells, and for the sake of the argument, let's say it svells faster than the speed of light. The raisins inside (the early matter later forming stable atoms, stars, galaxies...) does not however travel at the speed of light. They are just part of an expansion faster than c.
