X-ray pulsars are associated with strongly magnetized neutron stars in close binary systems. Their X-ray radiation is formed in polar caps heated by accretion of the matter supplied by the binary companion, or in accretion columns above the polar caps. In order for a neutron star to be a pulsar it has to have companion to accrete from.
